SCI was a common combat-related injury in the World Wars and Vietnam era and now affects more than 11% of military personnel injured in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The spinal cord may be damaged due to trauma or disease. Injury such a fracture of the vertebrae can cause tearing or pressure on the cord. Stab wounds or gunshot wounds can damage the spinal cord without breaking vertebrae. Paralysis may occur in parts of the body that are supplied by nerves leaving the cord below the level of injury.
